SEO vs GEO vs AEO: What’s the Difference, and Which One Does Your Business Need?
SEO Specialist
- SEO is the foundation. AI engines and answer boxes pull from pages that are already crawlable and indexed.
- AEO is about formatting answers: short, direct, question-led.
- GEO adds evidence, entity clarity and AI crawler access so generative engines trust and cite you.
- The goal shifts from “rank” (SEO) to “be the answer” (AEO) to “be the cited source” (GEO).
- One well-built page can win all three.

What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is the practice of improving your website so search engines can crawl, index and rank it for relevant searches. It covers technical health (speed, mobile, indexing), on-page content (keywords, headings, internal links) and off-page authority (backlinks and mentions). SEO is still where most website traffic comes from, and it is the base layer for everything else on this page. If you want a starting point, use my 10-point SEO audit.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so search engines and assistants can pull a direct answer from it. It became popular with featured snippets and voice search. AEO tactics include question-style headings, a short direct answer under each heading, numbered steps, comparison tables and FAQ sections. AEO is mostly about format: making the answer easy to extract.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization is the newest layer. It focuses on generative AI tools that read several sources and write a fresh answer with citations. The term comes from a 2024 Princeton-led research paper, which found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources can raise visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. GEO is mostly about trust and access: letting AI crawlers in and giving them evidence worth citing. Full guide: What is GEO?

The good news: the most valuable work serves all three at once.
- Crawlable, fast, indexed pages are required by Google, answer boxes and AI engines alike.
- Answer-first writing wins featured snippets (AEO) and gives AI a clean passage to cite (GEO).
- Expertise and evidence support Google’s quality signals (SEO) and the citation behaviour found in the GEO study.
- Structured data helps rich results (SEO), answer extraction (AEO) and entity understanding (GEO). See schema markup for AI search.
Where they differ
- Success looks different. SEO counts clicks. GEO often counts mentions, and a buyer may decide based on what AI said without visiting at all.
- Bots are different. GEO requires checking AI-specific crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, which classic SEO audits often ignore. If you are missing from ChatGPT, read 12 things to check.
- Keyword focus is different. SEO targets search phrases. GEO targets the long, conversational questions people type into AI, like “which SEO expert in Dhaka is good for a Shopify store?”
- Off-site signals weigh more in GEO. AI engines cross-check reviews, directories and articles before naming a brand.
Which one does your business need?
| Your situation | Focus first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New website, little traffic | SEO | Without indexing and basic rankings, AEO and GEO have nothing to work with |
| Ranking on page 1 but traffic is dropping | AEO + GEO | AI Overviews and answer boxes are taking clicks. Get cited inside them |
| Local service business (clinic, restaurant, agency) | SEO + GEO | Google Business Profile, reviews and entity clarity drive both map rankings and AI recommendations |
| E-commerce store | SEO, then GEO | Product schema, comparisons and buying guides feed AI shopping answers |
| B2B or expert service | GEO + SEO | Buyers research with ChatGPT. Original data and expert content earn citations |
