ChatGPT SEO for Roofers: How to Get Your Roofing Company Recommended by AI

RB Sojib
SEO Specialist

A homeowner in Cherry Hill opens ChatGPT at 11 pm, water dripping through the bedroom ceiling, and types: “Who’s the most reliable roofer near me for an emergency leak?” ChatGPT doesn’t show ten blue links. It names two or three companies, explains why, and the homeowner calls one of them in the morning. If your roofing company isn’t in that answer, you never even got a chance to compete.

I wanted to see this happen for real, so I asked ChatGPT that exact kind of question about Toms River, New Jersey. You’ll see the screenshots below, and they say a lot about who wins. That’s what ChatGPT SEO for roofers is really about: making sure AI assistants know your company exists, know what you do and where, and trust you enough to say your name. Below I’ll walk you through what ChatGPT showed me, what it reads, and the eight steps I’d take if I owned a roofing company tomorrow.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT search leans heavily on Bing, so a complete Bing Places profile matters for AI the way Google Business Profile matters for Google.
  • OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, must be allowed in your robots.txt, or your site won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers.
  • AI recommends roofers it can verify across many sources: your website, BBB, Angi, Yelp, Houzz, manufacturer directories and local news.
  • Pages that answer homeowner questions directly, with your towns, services, license and prices, are the ones AI quotes.
  • Good ChatGPT SEO is mostly good local SEO, done more thoroughly. It helps your Google rankings at the same time.

What is ChatGPT SEO for roofers?

ChatGPT SEO for roofers is the practice of optimizing a roofing company’s website and online presence so that ChatGPT and other AI assistants mention and recommend it when homeowners ask for roofing help. You’ll also hear it called AI search optimization, answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). The goal is the same: be the roofer the AI names.

The difference from classic SEO is the result format. Google gives a list and lets the homeowner choose. ChatGPT gives an answer, usually two to five names with reasons. There’s no page two. You’re either in the answer or you’re invisible.

How ChatGPT decides which roofers to recommend

ChatGPT doesn’t have its own map of every roofing company. When a homeowner asks a local question, ChatGPT search looks things up on the web, and local business details come from a mix of sources. Here’s what feeds those answers, based on OpenAI’s crawler documentation and Local Falcon’s research into ChatGPT’s local data sources:

SourceWhat ChatGPT gets from itWhat you should do
Bing search and Bing PlacesBusiness name, address, phone, hours, categoriesClaim and complete Bing Places
Your website (via OAI-SearchBot)Services, towns, licenses, prices, FAQsAllow the crawler; write clear service and town pages
Review and directory sitesReputation and consistency checksKeep BBB, Yelp, Angi, Houzz listings accurate
Local news, blogs and chambersIndependent proof you’re a real, trusted local companyEarn mentions and memberships
Facebook and social profilesRecent activity, hours, photosPost real jobs regularly

One surprise from my own test (more on it below): ChatGPT doesn’t connect directly to your Google Business Profile, but when it searches the web it can still find and cite Google review pages. So your Google reviews still count. They just aren’t the only thing that counts. A roofer with great Google reviews but an empty Bing Places listing and no directory profiles is leaving AI visibility on the table.

We tested it: what ChatGPT says about roofers in Toms River, NJ

On October 21, 2026, I opened ChatGPT with search turned on and typed a plain homeowner question: “Best roofing companies in Toms River NJ.” No tricks, no follow-up prompts. Here is exactly what came back.

ChatGPT answer listing the top roofers in Toms River, NJ with ratings, review counts and addresses
ChatGPT’s answer: four roofers with photos, star ratings, review counts, addresses and a one-line reason for each.

ChatGPT didn’t give me a list of websites. It gave me four companies, each with a photo, a star rating, the number of reviews, a street address and one sentence on what they’re good at. Then it went further and built a comparison table:

The comparison table. Notice the “Best fit” column and the note that ratings come from different platforms.

ChatGPT even placed the roofers on a map, like a mini map pack inside the chat.

Here’s what jumped out at me, and what it means for your roofing company:

  • Review volume won. The company listed first had 358 reviews at 5.0. One roofer with a 4.8 rating made the table with only 16 Google reviews, but it was helped by a mention on Expertise.com. Ratings alone weren’t enough. Volume and outside mentions mattered too.
  • Directories got cited by name. ChatGPT credited Expertise.com and Google as sources. If you’re not on the directories AI reads, you can’t be quoted from them.
  • Every company got a “best fit” label: storm damage, flat roofs, repairs, emergency work. AI pulled those from websites and listings. If your site doesn’t say clearly what you specialise in, the AI will guess, or pick someone else.
  • The phone field was empty for most of them. Even the winners missed an easy chance. Put your phone number as plain text on every page and keep it identical everywhere online.
  • Only four or five names made it. In Google you can rank tenth and still get the odd call. In ChatGPT, number six effectively doesn’t exist.

Your results will look different, because ChatGPT’s answers change from day to day and from person to person. But the pattern is the one I see again and again: the roofers AI recommends are the ones it can verify in several places. The eight steps below are how you become one of them.

8 steps to get your roofing company recommended by ChatGPT

1. Let OpenAI’s search crawler into your website

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find pages for ChatGPT search. OpenAI states that sites which block it won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Some security plugins and “block AI bots” settings block it by accident. Check your robots.txt (yourdomain.com/robots.txt) and make sure it allows the crawler:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: *
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://yourroofingco.com/sitemap_index.xml

You can still block GPTBot, which collects content for AI training, without affecting ChatGPT search. The two are controlled separately. OpenAI says changes can take about 24 hours to take effect. If you’re not sure what your site allows, run it through my free AI search (GEO) readiness checker.

2. Claim and complete your Bing Places listing

Because ChatGPT search is closely tied to Bing, Bing Places for Business is the AI-era equivalent of your Google Business Profile. The good news: Bing lets you import your Google profile in a few clicks. Then finish it properly:

  • Primary category Roofing Contractor, plus secondary categories like gutter or siding contractor if they apply.
  • Every service area town listed, not just your office address.
  • A description that names your services, towns, license number and years in business.
  • Real job photos, accurate hours and an emergency phone number if you offer 24/7 service.

3. Answer the questions homeowners actually ask AI

People talk to ChatGPT in full sentences. Instead of “roof repair Toms River”, they ask things like:

  • “Which roofers in Worcester are good with ice dam damage?”
  • “How much does a roof replacement cost in Connecticut in 2026?”
  • “Is it better to repair or replace a 20-year-old shingle roof?”
  • “Which Baltimore roofers fix flat rowhouse roofs?”

AI assistants quote pages that answer these questions plainly. Start each service and town page with a two- or three-sentence answer, then go into detail. Include real price ranges, the towns you serve, how fast you respond and what makes you different. A page that says “we offer quality roofing solutions” gives an AI nothing to repeat. A page that says “we replace asphalt shingle roofs in Ocean County, typically in one to two days, with a 10-year workmanship warranty” gives it a quotable fact.

Specific details about real jobs give AI assistants facts they can repeat.

4. Add RoofingContractor schema markup

Schema markup is code that tells machines, in a format they can’t misread, who you are, where you work and what you do. Schema.org has a dedicated RoofingContractor type. Add it to your home page and contact page with your real details:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "RoofingContractor",
  "name": "Your Roofing Co.",
  "url": "https://yourroofingco.com/",
  "telephone": "+1-555-555-0100",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "123 Main St",
    "addressLocality": "Toms River",
    "addressRegion": "NJ",
    "postalCode": "08753",
    "addressCountry": "US"
  },
  "areaServed": ["Toms River", "Brick", "Lakewood", "Jackson"],
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.bbb.org/your-listing",
    "https://www.facebook.com/yourroofingco"
  ]
}

The sameAs links are especially useful for AI: they connect your website to your profiles elsewhere, so the AI can confirm all of them describe the same company. Test your markup with my free schema checker.

5. Get reviews that describe the job, not just the stars

AI assistants summarize reviews to explain why they’re recommending someone. “Great job!” doesn’t help. “They replaced our roof in Brick after the nor’easter, showed up the next morning and cleaned up every nail” does, because it contains a service, a town and a reason to trust you. When you ask for reviews, gently prompt customers to mention what you did and where. Spread your reviews across Google, Yelp, BBB and Facebook, since ChatGPT reads more than one site.

6. Be mentioned on the sites AI trusts

AI recommendations work like word of mouth: the more independent places that mention your company consistently, the more confident the AI becomes. Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical on:

  • BBB, Yelp, Angi and Houzz, the directories homeowners already trust.
  • Manufacturer contractor directories, such as the certified contractor finders run by shingle brands.
  • Your local chamber of commerce and trade associations.
  • Local news and community sites: sponsor a youth team, help after a storm, get quoted on roof safety. Each article is another trusted mention.

7. Make your website easy for AI to read

AI crawlers are less patient than Google. Put important information in plain HTML text, not only in images, sliders or PDFs. Keep pages fast, use clear headings, and show your license number, phone number and service area as text on every page. Many sites now also publish an llms.txt file, a plain-text summary of your key pages. It’s a proposed standard and OpenAI hasn’t said ChatGPT uses it, so treat it as a low-cost extra rather than a ranking switch.

8. Test what ChatGPT says about you, then track it

Once a month, ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with search turned on, and note who it recommends and which sources it cites:

  • “Best roofing companies in [your town]”
  • “Who can fix a roof leak in [your town] this week?”
  • “What do people say about [your company name]?”

The cited sources show you exactly where to improve. If a competitor keeps appearing because of an Angi profile or a local news article, that’s your to-do list. In Google Analytics 4, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com to see how many visitors AI is already sending you.

Common ChatGPT SEO mistakes roofers make

  • Blocking every AI bot. A blanket “block AI” setting can remove you from ChatGPT search entirely.
  • Ignoring Bing. If Bing doesn’t know you, ChatGPT probably doesn’t either.
  • Different details everywhere. An old phone number on Yelp and a new one on your site makes AI less sure you’re the same business.
  • Vague marketing copy. “Quality, affordable roofing” gives AI nothing to quote. Facts, towns and numbers do.
  • Fake or AI-written reviews. They break platform rules, and they can be removed, taking your rating with them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend my roofing company?

No. There’s currently no paid local placement in ChatGPT’s answers. Recommendations come from what it finds about your business across the web, which is why consistent listings, reviews and clear website content matter.

Does ChatGPT use my Google reviews?

Indirectly, yes. ChatGPT has no direct link to Google Business Profile, but in my Toms River test it cited Google review pages alongside directories like Expertise.com. Keep collecting Google reviews, and build reviews on Yelp, BBB and Facebook too, so AI sees the same good reputation wherever it looks.

How long does ChatGPT SEO take for a roofer?

Technical fixes like allowing OAI-SearchBot take effect within about a day. Listings, reviews and mentions usually take two to four months to change what AI assistants say about you, depending on how competitive your area is.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular local SEO?

It builds on the same foundation: an accurate business profile, good reviews and helpful pages. The main differences are Bing Places, allowing AI crawlers, and writing content as direct answers that an AI can quote.

Will ChatGPT SEO hurt my Google rankings?

No. Clear answers, schema markup, consistent listings and genuine reviews are all things Google rewards too. Done right, ChatGPT SEO and Google SEO support each other.
